How to use the Matcha Whisk (Chasen)?

Prepare the bamboo whisk : Before using it, soak it in hot water for a few minutes to soften the strands and prevent them from breaking.

Whisking technique : Whisk the matcha using quick “M” or “W” shaped motions to incorporate air and achieve a light, creamy froth.

Whisk Care : After each use, immediately rinse the whisk with warm water without any cleanser to prevent matcha from sticking to the bristles. Let it dry, bristles down and handle up, to prevent water from seeping into the bamboo.

The chasen allows the matcha to be mixed evenly, while providing a traditional and pleasant frothy texture.

Why use the Chasen Whisk for preparing Matcha?

Using a Chasen matcha whisk is essential for an authentic and quality preparation. Thanks to its 120 bamboo strands, the Chasen allows the matcha powder to be well dissolved and air to be incorporated , thus creating a frothy and creamy texture. This technique enhances the taste experience by softening the natural flavors of the matcha and revealing all its umami richness . In addition, the bamboo whisk is gentle on the bowls, avoiding scratches, while respecting ancestral Japanese rituals , thus offering a unique and soothing experience with each use.

How is the Matcha Whisk - Chasen made?

The Chasen whisk is handcrafted using Japanese artisanal methods passed down through generations. It is crafted from a single piece of bamboo, carefully selected for its flexibility and durability . The process begins by cutting the bamboo into segments, which are then heated and sculpted to form the strands. These strands, thin and numerous, are delicately curved and shaped to ensure a frothy texture when preparing the matcha. Each Chasen is a meticulous work , guaranteeing a quality tool , perfect for revealing the creaminess and flavor of traditional matcha.

How to properly maintain your Matcha Whisk - Chasen?

To properly maintain a matcha whisk (Chasen) and extend its lifespan, follow these essential tips:

  • Before use: Soak the Chasen in hot water for a few minutes to soften the strands and make them more resistant.
  • After each use: Immediately rinse the whisk with warm water without using soap, to prevent the matcha from sticking to the bamboo strands. Gently shake it under water to remove residue.
  • Dry properly: Let it air dry naturally. Position it with the strands facing down to prevent water from collecting in the base.
  • Avoid Moisture: Do not leave the Chasen in a humid or enclosed environment, as this may cause the bamboo to become moldy.

These simple steps help preserve the effectiveness and quality of your matcha whisk, guaranteeing perfect foam with every preparation.

Bamboo, as a natural material, offers an estimated lifespan of around 300 uses for a matcha whisk, depending on how well it is maintained. Good care and regular cleaning can extend its longevity while maintaining its effectiveness.

Recipe and preparation of Traditional Matcha

The preparation of a Traditional Matcha follows precise steps, respecting the ancestral Japanese art of the tea ceremony.

Ingredients and materials:

- Large bowl for whisking matcha
- Bamboo whisk (chasen)-
- Bamboo measuring spoon (chashaku)
- Hot water (simmering, between 70°C and 80°C)
- Matcha Premium Ceremony

Preparation steps:

1. Heat the bowl (optional but recommended)
Before you begin, pour hot water into the matcha bowl to warm it up. This helps maintain the right temperature of the tea. Pour out the water and dry the bowl with a clean cloth.

2. Measure the matcha
Use about 1-2 chashaku scoops (or 1 teaspoon) of matcha powder. You can sift the powder before adding it to the bowl for an even smoother mixture.

3. Add hot water
Add about 60 to 80 ml of hot water (between 70°C and 80°C) to the bowl. The amount of water can vary depending on the desired thickness of the tea:

Usucha (light matcha): 1 to 2 chashaku spoons or 1 teaspoon of matcha for 60-80 ml of water.
Koicha (thick matcha): More powder (2-3 teaspoons) with less water (40-50 ml).

4. Whisk the matcha
Use the bamboo whisk (chasen) to mix the powder and water. Hold the whisk with a light hand and start whisking vigorously, forming an "M" or "W" shape with your movement. Continue until you get a fine, homogeneous foam on the surface.

Usucha : The mixture should have a light texture, with a thin layer of foam.
Koicha : No foam, but a thicker, almost creamy texture.

5. Taste
Once the matcha is well whisked, it is ready to be consumed. Hold the bowl with both hands and savor slowly in several sips.

Additional tips:
Use good quality water so that the taste of the matcha is not altered.
Water temperature is essential: water that is too hot can make the matcha bitter.
Take the time to whisk well to obtain a perfect texture, especially if you want a very frothy usucha.

This simple, yet precise ritual allows you to get the most out of the aromas and benefits of matcha.
