Why use the Matcha Whisk and Measuring Spoon Kit?

Using a matcha whisk (chasen) and a matcha spoon or spatula (chashaku) is essential for traditional and optimal preparation of matcha tea. The chasen, with its multiple bamboo strands, allows the matcha powder to be dissolved well and creates a light foam, thus revealing all the richness of its aromas and its creamy texture. As for the chashaku spoon, it allows you to precisely measure the quantity of matcha, guaranteeing a balanced and tasty infusion every time. Together, these accessories respect Japanese tradition and optimize the quality of your drink.

How are the Matcha Whisk and Measuring Spoon made?

The chasen whisk and matcha measuring spoon (chashaku) are made using traditional craft techniques passed down through generations in Japan.

Making the chasen whip :

The chasen is crafted from a single piece of bamboo that is carefully selected for its flexibility and durability . The process begins with cutting a segment of bamboo that is then hand-carved. The thin strands of the whisk are created by carefully splitting the bamboo, then they are bent into the characteristic shape that is used to whisk the matcha. Every step, from carving the strands to their final shaping, is carried out with great precision to ensure a frothy texture when preparing the matcha.

Making the chashaku spoon :

The chashaku, also made of bamboo, undergoes a manual carving process. The bamboo is first heated with steam to make it flexible, which allows the upper part to be curved to obtain its characteristic shape. This artisanal process gives the spoon its lightness and finesse, ideal for precisely measuring the matcha powder. Each spoon is shaped to offer a comfortable grip and a clean design , in harmony with traditional Japanese tea rituals .

These two accessories are essential tools for an authentic and respectful preparation of the tea ceremony.

How to maintain the Matcha Whisk and Measuring Spoon Kit?

To properly maintain your Matcha Whisk (chasen) and Measuring Spoon (chashaku), it is essential to follow a few simple rules which will extend their lifespan and guarantee optimal matcha preparation.

Matcha Whisk (Chasen) Maintenance:

Before use : Soak the chasen whisk in hot water for a few minutes to soften the strands and prevent them from breaking.
After use: Immediately rinse the whisk with clean, warm water without using soap. This prevents matcha powder from accumulating on the strands.
Drying: Place the chasen strands down, so that it air dries without deforming. This prevents moisture from stagnating inside the bamboo, which could damage the material.
Storage: Store the whisk in a dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent it from drying out or warping.

Maintenance of the measuring spoon (chashaku):

Cleaning: After each use, gently wipe the chashaku with a dry cloth or paper towel. Do not use water or detergent, as this may damage the bamboo.
Storage: Store the spoon in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight to preserve its shape and texture.

Recipe and preparation of Traditional Matcha

The preparation of a traditional Matcha follows precise steps, respecting the ancestral Japanese art of the tea ceremony:

Ingredients and materials:

- Large bowl for whisking matcha
- Bamboo whisk (chasen)
- Bamboo measuring spoon (chashaku)
- Hot water (simmering, between 70°C and 80°C)
- Matcha Premium Ceremony

Preparation steps:

1. Heat the bowl (optional but recommended)
Before you begin, pour hot water into the matcha bowl to warm it up. This helps maintain the right temperature of the tea. Pour out the water and dry the bowl with a clean cloth.

2. Measure the matcha
Use about 1-2 chashaku scoops of matcha powder. You can sift the powder before adding it to the bowl to get an even smoother mixture.

3. Add hot water
Add about 60 to 80 ml of hot water (between 70°C and 80°C) to the bowl. The amount of water can vary depending on the desired thickness of the tea:

Usucha (light matcha): 1 to 2 chashaku spoons of matcha for 60-80 ml of water.
Koicha (thick matcha): More powder with less water (40-50 ml).

4. Whisk the matcha
Use the bamboo whisk (chasen) to mix the powder and water. Hold the whisk with a light hand and start whisking vigorously, forming an "M" or "W" shape with your movement. Continue until you get a fine, homogeneous foam on the surface.

Usucha : The mixture should have a light texture, with a thin layer of foam.
Koicha : No foam, but a thicker, almost creamy texture.

5. Taste
Once the matcha is well whisked, it is ready to be consumed. Hold the bowl with both hands and savor slowly in several sips.

Additional tips:
Use good quality water so that the taste of the matcha is not altered.
Water temperature is essential: water that is too hot can make the matcha bitter.
Take the time to whisk well to obtain a perfect texture, especially if you want a very frothy usucha.

This simple, yet precise ritual allows you to get the most out of the aromas and benefits of matcha.
